Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality among women, despite being preventable through early detection methods such as Breast Self-Examination (BSE). Nurses play a critical role in health promotion and education; however, not all nurses possess adequate perceptions of breast cancer or routinely perform BSE. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nurses’ perceptions of breast cancer and their BSE practices. A quantitative, correlational research design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The sample consisted of 66 nurses working in the Dahlia, Edelweiss, Gardenia inpatient units and Seruni outpatient units at Arifin Achmad Regional Hospital, Riau Province, selected through total sampling. Data were collected using the Breast Cancer Perception Scale and a BSE practice questionnaire. Univariate analysis was conducted using measures of central tendency and frequency distribution, while bivariate analysis was performed using the Pearson chi-square test. The univariate results showed a median age of 37 years and a median length of employment of 12 years. Most respondents held a bachelor's degree in nursing with professional certification (53%) and were married (83.3%). Additionally, 92.4% had no family history of breast cancer, and 93.9% had no history of breast problems. More than half of the respondents (56.1%) had a positive perception of breast cancer, and 51.5% reported performing BSE occasionally. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between breast cancer perception and BSE practice (p = 0.034). These findings highlight the importance of enhancing nurses' awareness and encouraging regular BSE practices as a preventive measure against breast cancer.
