Abstract

Smartphone addiction among teenagers is becoming an increasingly serious issue along with the development of technology that facilitates access to information and communication. This study aims to analyze the duration of smartphone use, activities involving smartphone use, and the depiction of smartphone addiction among teenagers at SMAN 9 Pekanbaru. This study uses a quantitative method with a descriptive design and univariate analysis. The instrument used is the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS SV) questionnaire. The sample of this study consisted of 54 students from SMAN 9 Pekanbaru using purposive sampling technique. The results of the research conducted at SMAN 9 Pekanbaru show that the most common duration of smartphone use is > 6 hours, with 31 respondents (57.4%), and the most frequent activities are internet browsing, social media, and gaming, with 26 respondents (48.1%). The average smartphone addiction score obtained was 28.80 with a range of 10 - 60. The conclusion of this study is that the long duration of smartphone use and the activities performed on it are triggering factors for smartphone addiction among teenagers. This research is expected to provide insights into smartphone addiction among adolescents and serve as a reference for schools and health institutions in designing programs to prevent the negative impacts of smartphone use.
