Abstract

Menopause is a natural stage in a woman's life characterized by the permanent cessation of ovarian function, resulting in a decline in reproductive hormone levels, particularly estrogen. These hormonal changes may affect various aspects of women's health, including sexual function. Common sexual problems experienced during menopause include decreased sexual desire, reduced vaginal lubrication, impaired orgasm, and lower levels of sexual satisfaction. One safe and easily implemented management strategy is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy (PFPT), a pelvic floor muscle training method designed to improve muscle strength, enhance blood circulation in the pelvic region, and support better sexual function among menopausal women. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise (PFME) in improving the quality of sexual function among menopausal women in the working area of the Sekip Public Health Center, Palembang. This study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach without a control group. The study population consisted of menopausal women, with a total sample of 40 participants selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument used was the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The intervention was administered for four weeks, with a frequency of three sessions per week. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses, including the Shapiro–Wilk test and Paired t-test through a computerized statistical system. The results showed that the mean sexual function score increased from 24.85 ± 1.62 before the intervention to 38.96 ± 4.02 after the intervention. Statistical analysis revealed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise on the improvement of sexual function among menopausal women. In conclusion, Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise (PFME) was effective in improving the quality of sexual function among menopausal women as measured by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Therefore, PFME may be recommended as a simple, low-cost, and non-pharmacological intervention that can be implemented in primary healthcare services.
