Abstract

Collaboration between nurses and parents is central to the care of children with cancer, as parents are directly involved in monitoring symptoms, providing home care, making decisions, and offering emotional support to their child throughout the course of the illness. However, the latest evidence regarding such collaboration remains limited to communication, family-centred care, psychosocial support, and palliative care. This scoping review aims to examine nurse–parent collaboration in the care of children with cancer through research. The scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A search was carried out in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO for articles published between January 2021 and May 2026. Of the 959 articles identified, 221 duplicates were removed, 738 titles and abstracts were screened, 78 full-text articles were reviewed, and 24 studies met the criteria. The synthesis results identified four main domains of collaboration: building relationships based on trust, presence, and empathy; engaging in communication and mutual agreement; and enhancing parental skills and parental adaptation. Effective collaboration is evident when nurses combine emotional presence, clear communication, and a service system that provides opportunities for parents to participate in their child’s care. The findings can serve as a guide for the development of training programmes on collaboration between nurses and parents in the care of children with cancer.
