Thalassemia in children and treatment that is carried out routinely over a long period of time causes various complications such as enlargement of the liver and spleen, growth disorders, delayed puberty, and even heart failure. The continuity of the treatment process and prevention of complications in children with thalassemia is influenced by parental support. Parents need to be equipped with good knowledge, so they can provide good care for children suffering from thalassemia. The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge of parents who care for children with thalassemia. This research is quantitative research with a simple descriptive design. The sample in this study was 30 parents who had children with thalassemia. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Parental knowledge was measured using a questionnaire regarding the care of children with thalassemia which was adopted from previous research. The questionnaire was filled in by parents when the child had a blood transfusion in the Thalassemia Center room at Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province. Data analysis in this study used univariate analysis. The results showed that 11 parents (36.7%) had a good level of knowledge, 13 parents (43.3%) had sufficient knowledge and 6 parents (20%) had poor knowledge. The
results of the study show that there are still parents with sufficient and insufficient knowledge about caring for children with thalassemia, so nurses need to provide health information, especially about thalassemia and parental care for children with thalassemia to increase parents' knowledge.
