Abstract

Anxiety regarding the onset of the first menstruation (menarche) represents a significant mental health issue among school-aged children. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of health education on menstruation in reducing the level of student anxiety among elementary school girls aged 10–12 years (grades 4 and 5) at SD N 1 Jetis Bantul. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test approach, the study involved 45 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) questionnaire. The results indicated that prior to the intervention, the majority of students experienced moderate anxiety (60.9%). Following the provision of health education via animated videos and leaflets, a drastic reduction in anxiety levels occurred, with 95.6% of students shifting to the mild anxiety category. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming that health education interventions are significantly effective in reducing student anxiety when facing menarche. These findings emphasize the importance of early education to strengthen children's psychological readiness during the pubertal transition.
