HUBUNGAN PENGETAHUAN PERAWAT MENGENAI KOMUNIKASI SBAR DENGAN KEPATUHAN DALAM PELAKSANAAN HANDOVER DI RUANG RAWAT INAP

Abstract

Communication errors among healthcare professionals are a major cause of patient safety incidents, where ineffective handover significantly contributes to medical errors. This study was conducted to examine the association between nurses’ knowledge of SBAR communication and their compliance with patient handover practices in the inpatient wards of Arifin Achmad Regional Hospital, Pekanbaru. A quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design was employed. The study involved 57 staff nurses working in the medical inpatient wards, all of whom were recruited through a total sampling technique. Data were collected using an SBAR knowledge questionnaire and a handover compliance observation checklist. Univariate analysis was performed using frequency distributions, while the relationship between variables was analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test. The findings revealed that most respondents demonstrated good knowledge of SBAR communication (78.9%) and high compliance with handover procedures (70.2%). Nevertheless, the bivariate analysis yielded a p-value of 0.494 ($p > 0.05$), indicating no statistically significant relationship between nurses’ knowledge of SBAR communication and their compliance in conducting patient handovers. These findings suggest that handover compliance may be influenced by factors beyond knowledge alone, such as heavy workload and clinical supervision. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve compliance through strengthening active supervision by nurse managers.
