Abstract

Fishermen are at risk of contact dermatitis due to exposure to seawater, humidity, sunlight, marine organisms, and irritants such as oil and fuel. Data from Waetawa Public Health Centre showed an increase in contact dermatitis cases in Waesili Village, from 12 in 2022 to 17 in 2023 and 26 in 2024. This analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design aimed to determine the prevalence of contact dermatitis and analyse its association with personal hygiene, PPE use, and marine environmental exposure among 30 fishermen selected through total sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and observation, and analysed using Fisher’s Exact Test. The prevalence of contact dermatitis was 80.0% (95% CI: 62.7–90.5%). Personal hygiene (p=0.641), PPE use (p=1.000), and marine environmental exposure (p=0.073) were not significantly associated with contact dermatitis. However, marine environmental exposure showed the most notable descriptive difference in prevalence (PR=1.46; AR=29.5%). Preventive measures should focus on reducing prolonged wet contact and rinsing the skin with clean water after fishing.
